About Me
I don’t really like talking about myself. It’s tedious and I always feel like I’m giving too much information or not enough and end up annoying everyone.
So why start a blog then? Why not just journal, and talk purely to myself where I don’t need to worry who sees, or what information I put into it?
Well, for starters, I’m a historian by education – I know that journals are rarely as private as we like to think they are, especially after death when they can be widely published for the gawking of the masses. While I don’t dare assume my life will be important or interesting enough for my journal to be published, it might be useful enough to some future historian, provide just enough of a glimpse into 21st century daily life, that SOMEONE will read it. So I’ve never been able to journal effectively, as I’ve always assumed the possibility of some kind of audience. I therefore detest the idea of writing only for myself. It feels inconsiderate not to explain things as though to a stranger, simply because I already know the details.
Secondly, I’m an educator by hobby. I’m a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism*, which frankly is probably why most of my readers are even here in the first place. For those who came here as though they stumbled into a mushroom ring and were teleported to fairyland, the SCA is a medieval historical recreation and education organization, at the time of this writing a 501c3 nonprofit organization and all-around generally good time. I frequently teach classes and assist with recruitment – so hey if you’re not a member would you like to be? 😉 – so its pretty ingrained in me to establish myself and my background. Why am I teaching this class? What authority do I have on this subject? Etc.
Thirdly, I feel like someone, somewhere, might actually find some of what I have to say either entertaining or useful. I don’t think of myself as particularly funny, but I am a performer so I know how to appeal to people. (Read: I am a ham.) And while I’m no expert on any one subject I do dabble in quite a few and don’t consider myself a particularly poor hand at any of them. Jack of all Trades, Mistress of none, still better than a Mistress of only one, as an approximation of the old saying goes anyway.
The blog shall be my portfolio, from whence I may pull information at such later dates as I need to for assessment of my work by both a jury of peers and a court of Peers – if you know you know.
A few last pieces of information to note, as I don’t want to take anyone by surprise later – I am also a pagan witch. A heathen, to be exact, and though my faith has been of late given a poor reputation thanks to white supremacists, I can assure you I disagree with them and disavow their odious cause. I am a supporter of Declaration 127 and intentionally do NOT belong to the Asatru Folk Assembly. Additionally, I am queer, polyamorous, and non-neurotypical. If any of this bothers of offends you, well, you know where to find the door.
For anyone who, after all of this, has stuck around, I sincerely hope you enjoy my endeavors.
